Note from Teachers       Facts about America’s Blood Centers     Sponsorship

Who We Are

  • Founded in 1962, America's Blood Centers is an international network of local non-profit, community blood centers. Members of America's Blood Centers are licensed and regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
  • ABC members are located in 45 states and in Canada, serving more than 150 million people at 500 blood donation sites. ABC members provide blood products and services to more than 3,300 hospitals throughout the U.S. and deliver more than 450,000 units a year to hospitals in Québec.

ABC'S Blood Banking Philosophy

  • ABC members subscribe to a community-based blood banking philosophy. That means community donors know that the blood they give stays in that community first to help patients that are family members, friends and neighbors. Any excess supply is shared with other communities who need it most.

ABC Member Collections

  • ABC members collected more than 7.5 million units of whole blood in 2001 - that's nearly half of the U.S. blood supply as well as 25% of the Canadian blood supply.
  • ABC members yearly provide more than 10 million blood components (including red blood cells, platelets and plasma) to hospital customers.
  • ABC members also provide hospitals and their patients with a majority of the nation's tissue, bone marrow, stem cell and transfusion services.
  • Corporate blood drives are ABC members' largest source of blood donations, followed by schools, civic groups and the faith community.

Research & Development

  • ABC members receive the majority of blood-related NIH research funds.
  • An ABC member (New York Blood Center) invented hepatitis B vaccine and solvent-detergent blood sterilization.
  • An ABC member (BloodSource) received the first FDA accreditation for Fresh Frozen Plasma Donor Retested (FFP-DR).
  • An ABC member (New York Blood Center) operates the largest cord blood bank in America.

ABC Educational Programs

  • My Blood, Your Blood is an educational multimedia project for K-8 students that teaches them about blood biology, blood circulation, and the importance of becoming a blood donor.
  • The Foundation for America's Blood Centers funds My Blood, Your Blood and other educational and awareness programs.
