The Need       Who Can Donate       Safety & Testing
Organize a Blood Drive

Blood centers follow five layers of rigorous safety procedures:
  • Blood donor eligibility standards
  • Individual screening
  • Laboratory testing
  • Confidential exclusion of donations
  • Donor record check

Twelve tests are performed on every unit of donated blood. Nine are for infectious diseases, including screenings for:
  • Hepatitis (a liver infection)
  • HIV (the virus that causes AIDS)
  • HTLV-I (a virus associated with a rare form of leukemia)
  • HTLV-II
  • Syphilis

When people donate blood I think that they should be happy because they are helping other people that really need it.
