Wegovy pill dosage chart and daily instructions

Daily oral Wegovy has an administration routine that matters as much as the tablet strength. It is a prescription treatment, not an over-the-counter substitute for an injection.

What to know: Start and escalate only as prescribed; take tablets on an empty stomach and wait at least 30 minutes before food, drinks, or other oral medicines.

The daily tablet schedule

The label starts with 1.5 mg daily for 30 days, then 4 mg daily for 30 days, then 9 mg daily for 30 days, followed by the recommended 25 mg daily maintenance dose. Lower strengths introduce treatment rather than representing the recommended maintenance dose.

If you struggle with a step, ask the clinician how to proceed. Tablet escalation should not be rushed to chase a trial result, and a previous injectable dose does not authorize skipping the initiation schedule. The label contains specific switching instructions that a prescriber must apply.

Morning routine and missed tablets

Swallow the tablet whole with up to 4 ounces of water in the morning on an empty stomach. Do not crush, chew, dissolve, or split it. Wait at least 30 minutes before breakfast, coffee, other beverages, or other oral medicines.

If a daily tablet is missed, skip it and take the next scheduled tablet the following day. Do not double the dose. Discuss a consistent routine and the timing of other medicines with a pharmacist, especially medicines requiring their own fasting schedule.

Different from Rybelsus and compounded oral products

Oral Wegovy and Rybelsus are separately labeled products. A compounded oral semaglutide product has not passed FDA review as a generic equivalent and cannot borrow the approved product's absorption or clinical evidence.

Your clinician should assess contraindications, other medicines, pregnancy plans, and whether the fasting routine is practical. Tablets are not automatically safer than injections, and the current Wegovy label advises against breastfeeding during tablet treatment.

Safety before any dose change

These medicines have boxed warnings about thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodents; whether the same risk occurs in humans is unknown. Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 is a contraindication. This is different from saying that every thyroid condition prevents treatment.

Review severe stomach problems, previous pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, diabetes-related eye disease, pregnancy plans, and all medicines with your prescriber. Insulin or sulfonylureas can increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with these treatments. Vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration and kidney injury.

Severe persistent abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of an allergic reaction require prompt medical assessment. Do not increase a dose to overcome slow weight loss or copy another person's prescription. Tell the anesthesia team about treatment before procedures because delayed gastric emptying can affect aspiration risk.
