A reading exercise

Inspect a chart in a BPC-157 discussion before copying a number from it. Read the axis labels and spacing, then look for printed values or an accompanying table. Consider whether the precision you intend to report comes from those values or from judging the position of a mark by eye. Enlarge the chart and ask whether magnification supplies additional numerical information or merely makes the same mark easier to see. If you must estimate visually, identify the result as an estimate and avoid adding decimal places that the display cannot justify. Keep questions about rounding separate from questions about statistical uncertainty.

Questions to take away

  1. Is the number I plan to quote printed or estimated from a mark's position?
  2. Does enlarging this chart provide new values or only a larger view?
  3. Which precision comes from the displayed numbers, and which uncertainty needs separate explanation?
