A reading exercise

Annotate a copper tripeptide-1 passage using one mark for what was observed and another for what the author thinks it means. Connect each interpretation to the particular observation offered in support. Beside each connection, write the additional assumption needed to move from the observation to the interpretation. Then try describing the observation without that assumption. Compare the two versions and identify which words depend on accepting the extra step. The aim is to make the reasoning inspectable, not to strip the passage of all interpretation. Keep any unresolved connection as a specific question that another reader could investigate.

Questions to take away

  1. Which words describe the observation, and which words express an interpretation?
  2. What assumption connects the observation to the meaning assigned to it?
  3. How would I describe the observation if that assumption remained unresolved?
